The History of Barrett Schools: 1926 - the Present

Barrett School (pictured above) was built in 1926. James Walder was the first principal (1926 - 1934). At that time, the school housed first through twelfth grade, with one room and one teacher per grade until the high school level.
There were three principals during the 1930's: Mr. John Henry (1934-1936), Mr. Paul Baker (1936-1938), and Mr. Andrew Lewis (1938-1954). Back then students walked to school and enrollment was less than 200.
Dress in those days consisted of dresses or skirts for the girls and dress pants and sweaters for the boys. During the winter months, girls were allowed to wear pants under their skirts. A one-piece uniform was worn for gym class.
During the 1940's and 1950's Barrett remained a small school. First through sixth grades were downstairs and grades seven through twelve were upstairs. Boys had to wear their hair short and sneakers were only allowed in gym class.
Mr. George Webb, Jr.. and Mr. Peak were principals. There was no lunch served in the cafeteria; therefore, students had to bring a bagged lunch.
The last graduating class from Barrett High School was the Class of 1961. Ms. Edna Eife was principal for one year. Mr. David Guthrie served as principal from 1963 to 1974.
During the 1960's and 1970's a new library and gym and were added to the building. The stage was enclosed and the wood and metal shops, the locker rooms, and showers were eliminated. New desks were purchased that were no longer one piece. The hardwood floors were covered with carpets and the school now housed first through sixth grades. Mr. John Sengle was principal from 1974-1982 and each grade included two classes. During the 1980's students from Tobyhanna Elementary Center became a part of Barrett Elementary Center due to a fire at their school. Mr. John Savidge was principal from 1982 to 1985. Mr. Thomas Kopetskie from 1985 to 1989. Because of overcrowding, kindergarten classes were held at Buck Hill Camp Club.

Many changes occurred during the 1990's. In 1989, a new school, Barrett Elementary Center was built. It is located behind the original school, at one time known as Barrett Learning Center, which temporarily housed kindergarten and first grade due to overcrowding. Kindergarten and first grade students returned to Barrett Elementary Center. Mr. John Ritchey was the principal from 1989 to 1999. Mrs. Kristen Serfass was the principal from 1999 - 2000. From 2000 - 2004, Mr. Randal J. Secor was the principal of Barrett Elementary Center. Mrs. Karen Doughton was the principal from 2004-2006. The current principal, Mrs. Heidi Donohue, has been at BEC since 2006.
At this time (2008 - 2009), the original school is now The Academy, an alternative school for Pocono Mountain High School Students. The roots and history of Barrett schools were buried deep. One might even say that they reach from the old building to the new.
