November/December 2008

Our theme for the months of November and December is “Respect”.  This also includes our no tolerance policy of bullying. Bullying means hurting someone with words or actions repeatedly over time. What distinguishes bullying from teasing is the repetition of the behavior and the clear intent to inflict harm on the victim.

Attitudes and actions that suggest that “boys will be boys”, that bullying is “normal kid stuff” can be extremely detrimental. When schools call attention to the problem of bullying and establish the attitude that “we don’t accept bullying”, bullying incidents decrease in severity.

We are asking for your help in this campaign to eliminate bullying. If your child is having a problem the following suggestions may help:

  1. Ask specific questions about what is happening.
  2. Reassure your child that bullying is not his/her fault and it is not okay.
  3. Encourage your child to talk about this with his/her teacher or other trusted adult at school.
  4. Talk with your child’s teacher. Find out what they have observed and what support they can offer your child.
  5. Offer suggestions such as always staying with a group of friends, staying close to adults and avoiding places the bully normally goes.
  6. Continue to monitor the situation. Meet with the teacher, counselor or principal to develop an alternate plan if needed.

When you visit our school for parent conferences and National Education Week, please look for our “Anti-Bullying Pledges” that our students will be signing. There will also be one for parents to sign in the lobby.  We appreciate your support!!!
